William Shakespeare's Hamlet is likely one of the best-known and so much commented upon paintings of literature in Western tradition. the anomaly is that it's instantly totally established and surprisingly elusive—very like our personal selves, argues Gabriel Josipovici during this stimulating and unique research. in addition, our wish to grasp this elusiveness, to “pluck the guts out of its mystery,” as Hamlet himself says, accurately mirrors what's going within the play; and what Shakespeare's play demonstrates is that to conceive human personality (and artistic endeavors) during this approach is profoundly inaccurate.

Indd 37 10/25/2012 10:46:30 AM 38 STYLE IN THEORY conceal (“absconde”)5 and to inscribe within one’s memory the exempla that have been read and meditated upon, as the following passage demonstrates: Hec visa sunt de apium imitatione que dicerem, quarum exemplo, ex cuntis que occurrent, electiora in alveario cordis absconde eaque summa diligentia parce tenaciterque conserva, nequid excidat, si fieri potest. Neve diutius apud te qualia decerpseris maneant, cave: nulla quidem esset apibus gloria, nisi in aliud et in melius inventa converterent.

We could call it an extraterritorial, cosmopolitan style of thought, which apparently shuns history but which comes through as a form of suspicion toward what are perceived as superannuated, grand philosophies of culture. And yet, for all its abstractions, this newfangled stylistic mode of philosophizing coincides with a perception of the phenomenal, material, and physical realities of experience. 2 The past, so they argue, can only be retrieved from a detached, ironic perspective. To grasp how much they all owe to Nietzsche’s inimitable and yet, paradoxically, exemplary style we should briefly look at the precise genealogy of Nietzsche’s own adventurous understanding of style: the traditions of pre-Socratic aphorisms and, more generally, the framework of the Sophists.
